Plow Days

DSC00835

Friends of ours belong to a draft horse club and had a plow day near by. It was so much fun to see 13 teams pulling down the field, turning over ribbons of dark moist soil.

The teams would plow a little ways, then stop for a breather while their drivers would talk about the soil, the horses, or the weather to each other.

The spectators would stand and watch them sit there and talk and decided it would take a long time to get the field done that way. Mr. Brockett really thought someone should have picked the rocks out of the field to make it easier to plow. Why do rocks always rise to the surface anyways? What happened to gravity?

One elderly teamster drove his team up and stopped right in front of us and asked Hillary if she wanted to drive. Of course, Hillary had a real hard time deciding! She was on the seat before you could say, “Giddy-up!”IMG_4006

Amadu and Adama had a turn also. And guess what! Adama got her picture in the Daily News!!IMG_4014

Everybody took a break for lunch. Hotdogs and hambugers with lots of salads people had brought to share. Plates never seem to be big enough!

A friend had just got a team of ponies and they went trotting around trying to prove they could run circles around the big draft horse teams!

Boaz had lots of fun smiling at all the people and watching those HUGE horses walk by him. By the way, Sunday was his 1st birthday!!!

After lunch, the horses went back to work.

One of the teams went back out with the disk and the teamster asked us if we wanted to drive. Peter was happy to drive a team after all these years. A long time ago we had a team of horses and oh, the wagon rides we had and sleigh rides! We used to tie our sleds behind the sleigh and just laugh as Peter made the horse trot along through the white clean snow.

I remember when I was little standing next to Peter and asking to drive our horses. I’ve driven my horse with a cart last year, but it was neat to drive a team.

It was Ben’s first time driving a team as he was too young when we had horses.

Ben took some of these pictures with Pete’s camera, but I love this picture! =)
