Plastic Pullin' Day then Brake Time

Last Saturday (5th), our day started at 6am. It was the day to put plastic on the greenhouse - the wind was calm, the rain from the day before had made things a little muddy, but not too bad. : )
We got the ropes thrown over to be ready to pull, the tennis balls, plastic, ladders, etc. were all gathered together and ready to go. At 6:30am the Brockett family came over to help.

The 40'x100' plastic came on rolls so we unrolled one and pulled the egdes out then unrolled the second roll on top of it. To pull the plastic over without ripping it too much we put a tennis ball below the 2 layers of plastic, pulled the plastic around it, then Amadu tossed us the rope and we tied it nice and tight.







Meanwhile, underneath the plastic were Adam, Jonathan, and Ben who were fastening the plastic to the greenhouse. There was a rail kind of shaped like a "C" along the bottom of the wall that we pulled the plastic up tight to and then worked a zig-zag piece of wire, called "polylock" into the rail to hold the plastic in.

The boys had long sticks with a tennis ball pushed on the end to help loosen the plastic and push it over if it got stuck somewhere.

We had to pull it really hard to get the plastic down far enough to fit in the rail. It was a very close fit!

(8:30am) While the boys fastened that side of the plastic the girls got to go inside and get ready to eat the feast Mom, Mrs. Brockett, and Becky had put together.



There were homemade waffles, pancakes, home-fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, orange juice and real milk...and the best was the sausage!




Here are all the muddy boots sitting in the mud room while their owners ate the feast.



As we finished up our breakfast and felt that we had accomplished a day's work, the next shift pulled in - Mr. Torry, Mr. Liptak, and Peter and Amy. Mr. Torrey and Mr. Liptak started working away with our van brakes that had given out the week before.




Becky took Adama and Clara out to the garden to plant some cold crops. The metal frame in the back of the picture is now covered with plastic and we have planted some veggies because we can't wait to get garden fresh produce! : )

The rest of the day we worked on putting the gas line up in the greenhouse for the heaters, getting electric to the greenhouse, playing tag in the yard, crawling under the van, pumping brakes, then resting... swinging on the swing in the arbor, grilling hotdogs and hamburgers outside(yummy) and wishing the volleyball court was dry enough to play volleyball. ; )



So, that was an unusual day with the Darts. Not that any day is usual. : )
